No Plan for Troop Withdrawal in Iraq; No Surprise

This week General David Petraeus is to give his “State of Iraq” to Congress. It is being reported in headlines across the country that he is unlikely to recommend troop cuts in Iraq. Some seem to be surprised by this, as if they expected half of the troops to be called home and a timetable established for removing the rest of them. Anyone who expected such a result must have had their head in the sand for the past year.

General Petraeus is a highly capable and forward thinking General. His plan for and subsequent carrying out of the troop surge last year is looking like it will go down as the decision that changed the War in the favor of the United States, this war’s Gettysburg if you will.

Gen. Petraeus is smart enough to know that drawing down US troop levels too soon could prove detrimental to all of the progress made over the last year. Certainly, things are much more stable than they were a year ago. Iraqi troops are more capable and the Government is slowly (very slowly) making progress on some key issues. However whatever progress has been earned does not yet justify a troop draw down.

Continued US presence at current levels for at least the next six months, if not year, will demonstrate to the Iraqi people that the United States is not being driven by politics in their case, that the US is committed to securing Iraq for the betterment of her people, and sends a strong message to Al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) and other insurgent groups that they will continue to be pursued and hunted out of their hiding spots.

Certainly, a vast majority, if not all, of Americans want the troops home as soon as possible. I fall into that camp. However attaining such a goal is not worth it at the expense of further destabilizing Iraq and the region. The United States must not leave Iraq to the likes of radicals who would set up another Islamic Republic or, heaven forbid, a Taliban-like state. Both of these outcomes are quite possible if the US leaves too soon.

What else we can expect from the United States government, it is not surprise for people living in middle east region too. The US is trying to play oil game now and to play the game it would need the presence of US troops in Iraq.

Bush says during his speeches on Iraq that he succeeded in his plan. The White House and the generals serving in Iraq always talk about the military success in Iraq. But they forget to to tell the world that they have produced a potentially fatal political crisis and a probable civil war in Iraq.

US SHOULD GO OUT FROM IRAQ NOW. IT illegally ATTACKED THE NATION WITH MORE THAN 160,000 US TROOPS AND MADE THE LIFE OF COMMON IRAQI HELL. THE US ADMINISTRATION TREATS THE IRAQI GOVERNMENT AS SUBSIDIARY GOVERNMENT AND ASK THEM TO RETAIN US SUPPORT FOR LONG.

The decision is a setback for UK troops currently serving in Iraq. This is against the Prime Minister's strategy of slow withdrawal of troops after providing training to the Iraqi troops. last year, the British military had also decided to pull its troops out of Basra. Withdrawal of troops is the solution of problems in Iraq.

It is no less than a surprise. Failed Nu Lab policies would result in more troops from US in Iraq and more deaths of innocent civilians in the country. I believe the US troops will be there as long as they can continue getting the expenses and free lunches on the cost of Iraqi government.

Hey Steve, you have selected very good image of a soldier in the article. It is expressing the pain the soldiers are feeling right now. We can feel their pain but people in White House cannot feel the same. Its bad bad decision.

We would see another Ryan Crocker-David Petraeus show and the kind of support for them from White House. They would again ask for more time next time too. They are working hard to evolve another strategy to keep the troops remain in Iraq for next 2-3 years.

They received green signal from government because they have worked hard and showed the positive results. I remember when Petraeus testified before Congress in September last year, no one could deny the positive results as the troops had damaged the network of Al-Qaeda's operations. The rebellious Sunni Muslim areas were coming under control. Let them do their job as they are doing it, it is good for Iraq.

The US troops were successful in Sunni dominated areas, but the area dominated by Shiite population from Baghdad to Basra is still unstable as always. The US-trained Iraqi police force have surrendered police posts to local extremist forces loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

No troops withdrawal recommended after July to protect gains and to first assess the impact of troops' removal on security. General David Petraeus looks as if he is trying to cover his own ass. BTW did you hear John McCain once again showed his profound knowledge on Islamic world by calling al Qaeda an "obscure sect of the Shi'ites." Guess its the 2nd time he confused between Shia and Sunni.

Gen. David Petraeus and Amb. Ryan Crocker are reporting again on the situation in Iraq. Guess who they will be facing in Senate Armed Services Committee? McCain and Clinton - the two runners for the presidency. Petraeus and Crocker might well end the campaign for Clinton before Obama drive in the final nail for her. Don't forget the kind of mad media coverage the entire issue of the war will get in the coming two days.

So my bet is Hillary Clinton will miss the event but then Obama will seize her by the throat. It may also give her the slim chance to hit freak home run.

The progress report that General David Petraeus is going to submit to the Senate Armed Services Committee is most certainly being scripted by George and John, I mean Bush and McCain. (Forgive my embarrassing habit of calling my buddies by the first names).

The point is that any excuse to keep the troops in Iraq will be a tragedy for both the Iraqis and the Americans alike. It is now time for a joint Arab force under the UN gambit take over the control of Iraq with few monitors from Europe and America coordinating things there.

Hmmm, I disagree with much of the thoughts here, like the US is just there for Oil (if that were the case, why haven’t we seen any yet?) Also, Gibson, to say that the continued presence of US troops in Iraq means more civilian deaths is naive. Just look at what AQI did in areas not patrolled by the troops. They were brutal murderers. We continue to find mass graves. Do you honestly think all that will go away once the US leaves? No way. These people want a Taliban like state. Brutal and genocidal. That is what would happen if we leave.
I know a lot of Soldiers that just left Iraq and most of them fully support our efforts there. I don’t understand why it is so hard to believe that at least one of Bush’s main motivations is ensuring that Iraq is stable and the people are free? Freedom and democracy = less terrorism and deaths. America is doing the right thing in Iraq.

While the upcoming Presidential Candidates are seemingly unclear upon their stand on Iraq war, here we have General David Petraeus adamantly declaring ”No troops cut in Iraq”. Iraq has been victimized by America and its inane physiology of restoring normalcy in Iraq. If American troops continue to be in Iraq, the chance for peace and stability is just next to impossible.
