Obama or McCain; The Unknown vs. Known

As I watched Barack Obama’s speech last night at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, I thought, “man, this guy is good. How on earth can McCain beat that?”

I am a life-long Republican and there are few Democrats I would consider voting for, certainly not someone as left-wing and inexperienced as Obama. Or would I?

You see, I don’t like McCain, not one bit. Sure, I appreciate the service he gave to our country both in the service and in the Senate. I even think that in terms of political ideology, I most closely align with him than anyone else, even Mitt Romney (my man-crush!). But something rubs me the wrong way about him. For one, I don’t like how he left his first wife to marry a filthy rich woman, it sure seemed like a move for career and political expediency. Ultimately, though, I can’t put my finger on why I don’t like him, he just doesn’t sit well.

But as for Barack, he is the most left-wing of all the Democratic candidates (saving Dennis Kucinich), he has ZERO experience, I don’t think I can believe anything that comes out of his mouth, he is fairly spineless-in that he has more non-votes in the Senate than any other Senator, and his support for partial-birth and live-birth abortion is unforgivable. But yet, in my gut he sits better than McCain (although Biden doesn’t).

So when it comes time to choose who I will vote for, who do I go with? The thing is it comes down to the known vs. the unknown. With John McCain you know exactly what you are getting. One can practically map out his Presidency. Yes, he is quite different from Bush (despite the rhetoric from the DNC), but with his wealth of experience, there are few surprises. He is the safe choice and he is a moderate that can satisfy huge swaths of the American public from both sides of the aisle. One can pretty well say, that his Presidency would likely be ranked in the early to mid-20’s; right there with GHW Bush and Clinton; nothing to write home about, but nothing to be ashamed of either.

However, with Barack, we have no idea what we are getting. He could be the greatest President ever or he could go down in flames and be a disaster. He could give us more prosperity while helping the poor stay dependent on the government or he could bankrupt the country through re-distribution of wealth. Who knows?

The other things to consider are current events and world realities. The one thing no one is talking about is Russia. This issue with Russia that we are dealing is infinitely more important than Iraq, Afghanistan or the overall War on Terror. Putin is the most dangerous person in the world (I’ve been saying it for years), I know McCain can handle it, I’m not sure about Barack; does a term or two in the Illinois legislature and 2-years in the US Senate prepare a man (or woman) to stare down a man like Putin? We may find out.

On the other hand, Barack Obama can do wonders in terms of soft power on the international stage. We need a new face in Europe and Australia, Barack could be a super-star in our dealings over seas. Additionally, I generally think that the Democrats are better at international affairs, at least the moderate ones, than Republicans; but again only in terms of soft power.

So I am torn, I am leaning McCain, but if Obama can govern as well as he can speak, he would be great (won’t happen). So with this indecision, there are three things that are currently moving me or will move me. First, the Democrats are going to win more seats in Congress and maintain its power there, I don’t want anymore one-party control of my Government, so having a Republican in the White House is essential. Maybe we could get lucky and nothing will get done for four years. Point-McCain.

Second, McCain’s choice for Vice President can move me. If it is Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Meg Whitman, Colin Powell, or Gen. Petraeus (it won’t be the latter two) I am 100% in his camp. If it is Mike Huckabee or any other evangelical leader I am 100% in Obama’s camp. If it is Pawlenty, or any other ho-hum choice, I remain unmoved. We will find out in about 3 hours. Point-tie.

Finally, I can consider four years down the road. I think McCain will be mediocre, and I am betting that Obama is OK with a lot of mistakes; I don’t see the country being much better off. As a Republican and gigantic Mitt Romney supporter, I often think why not let the Democrats get the blame for the debacle of the next four years, have Romney get the GOP nod in 2012 and win the White House? Finally getting the most competent and smart person available in a position he is perfect for. Point: Obama.

So as you can see I am back where I started. I will probably go with McCain, but who knows, there is more convincing that needs to be done.

Hello Steve,
Obama has very little experience to do much more than what his special interest and lawyer led handlers tell him to say or do. He has been under their thumb since they brought him to Chicago and put him on the welfare check list team.

Here’s a letter I sent to my Democrat governor of Arizona (Napolitano)...
It somewhat outlines what is going on in the private sector with people working with McCain.

Who by the way, was thrown out by his ex wife at one time due to his short lived POW problems and drive to continue serving America...

THEN he met a not so rich young woman whom he eventually married She had not inherited the beer company yet as far as I know...

Just wait and watch the Republican convention and if you can handle less BS and background noise and phony crying by pot heads... You might change your mind.

RE: McCain Economic Energy Plan, Mealer Companies.
Dear Governor Napolitano,
As a constituent of yours here in Arizona, yet across the political spectrum as a Republican leaning conservative, I must compliment you on the excellent job you have done governing Arizona. We will miss you when you retire from office this year.

I am writing this letter to inform you of the economic strength Senator McCain will be able to bring to the USA when he is elected president. Arizona will benefit from McCain’s economic & energy plan as will America. I began calling this plan the 3R plan as the private sector has defined Senator McCain’s outline to Rethink, Reform and Reinvent the US economy while taking on a tremendous energy plan.

The goals include massive job training for thousands of new USA mfg companies while utilizing existing (thousands of) abandoned buildings for training and new mfg arenas. We expect to allow the current owners of these abandoned buildings to take full advantage of the existing tax breaks as they allow America to retrain and ultimately take-over their defunct buildings. Americans demand more from themselves and from our struggling economy… We will create an incredible amount of new businesses and new jobs through this plan.

All of this while putting hundreds of thousands of people to work through support businesses (food, retail, housing, leisure, etc) while many more people will be furnished jobs during the building(s) transformation. This is a win-win situation and something more along the lines of Teddy Roosevelt… Who is, as we all know, one of John McCain’s political heroes.

We cannot afford a tax and spend, “giveaway-artist” who can’t seem to tell the truth about a single issue. Obama is not ready to lead the USA. You backed him over Clinton and surprised all of America by straying from your otherwise pro-American, pro-Economy, pro-Gun, pro-Freedom beliefs.

Mealer Companies along with many other green auto mfg firms have automobiles that will replace fossil fuel powered vehicles. Of course, Mealer Companies is a mainly Arizona based, wholly Made In USA, automobile mfg who, in my opinion, will offer the most viable green-engineered vehicles and full power supply systems for home/office to the public. Yes, power replacement device that is way ahead of it’s time, yet long overdue. We expect to have an incredible impact on the US economy, the world ecology and eventually we fully expect to halt the need for crude oil and coal as a power source.

Mealer Companies is currently being set-up for massive funding through a joint venture company while accessing added exposure from such Conservative celebrities as actor Stephen Baldwin and radio talk show host, Kevin McCullough. While no agreements have yet been made, we are seeking to gain both business partners and celebrity backing as we move into a new era of Change.
It’s almost comical how environmentalist groups have rallied behind a totally inane mysticism and the candidate furthest from any sort of solution! When they step back and see that Obama’s economic plan is vague, unambiguous and otherwise hollowed out for special interest groups… Perhaps they might still have a chance to make the right choice.

We expect to also gain celebrity insight, promotion and fan-based backing with other McCain supporters; Sylvester Stallone, Jon Voight, Tom Selleck, Lou Ferrigno, Dennis Miller, Roger Staubach and so many more sensible people as an added push into a massive McCain 3R economic-energy agenda.

We must replace the very rapidly lost fuel tax source before we replace fossil fuels. Through the McCain 3R plan, we have this opportunity and we expect to take it. We have the plan, we have the infrastructure, we have a very bright American future if we can put McCain’s plan to work. WE means people who can think for themselves and who care for our nation and for people in general.
Please, accept my personal offer to further honor Arizona and America as you part your ways in politics, by helping to promote a stronger America through Mealer Companies and John McCain’s Economic Energy plans. I am not asking you to drop the endorsement of your fellow Democrat Senator Obama, but simply asking you to endorse a truly American plan for economic growth through USA mfg and energy independence.

Mealer Companies and everything I am telling you may be researched and proven to be true and legitimate through the contacts enclosed- which include the City Government of Show Low, Arizona, the Arizona State Department of Commerce, Homeland Security, my lawyer, my excellent, personal and business references and the joint venture company itself.

Sincerely,
John Lewis Mealer

The choice of Sarah Palin by McCain is interesting.

They pack a lot of punch where experience is concerned and kinda appeals to the female voters who would have voted for Hillary otherwise.

I will give the Republicans a fairly good chance to win the November elections.

a) Two experienced politician with the presidential candidate having the added decoration of a war veteran and a POW.
b) A young governor, a beauty contest winner and above all a female that was Hillary's main USP.

Well, despite my uncertainty on Friday morning when I wrote this, I am now firmly in McCain’s camp. I am thrilled about Sarah Palin. It is fantastic. She was one of the very few Veep selections that McCain could have made that would guarantee my vote for him. I want a bumper sticker that says mccain/PALIN 2008. I just want her in the white house. Great choice by McCain.

If the world had accepted the idea of sticking with the known instead of switching to the unknown, we would still be using candle instead of electricity.

Known Vs. Unknown. Cool headline. Only one thing missing in the post. The knowns have continued to fail America in the post Regan years and couldn't deliver what America and Americans wanted and needed.

So gambling with the unknown looks pretty tempting this time and I guess America will take the gamble.

John McCain might be having loads of experience. He will bring a truckload of experience with him to the White House but with dementia.
On the other hand Joe Biden is a fit guy to be the Veep coz he got the foreign policy front strong that the US needs today when one after another of its FP is failing under the Republicans.

Sarah Palin vs Joe Biden!

There you have your unknown vs know all over again.

I am inclined to think that this is like a strategy by both the presidential candidates to infuse into their respective campaigns what was supposed to be lacking either way.

While McCain is looking for a little charisma, Obama is surely vying for a experienced hand at foreign policy. All square I guess.

Gagandeep,

You do have it all over again, but it is hardly all square. The Veep choice is far less important than the Pres candidate. While the Choice of Palin was huge for me personally, It likely won’t make a ton of difference in the overall election.

It is now or never for the great United States of America to denounce its sinful past and bring about a change in the great country that many believe is destined to lead the world. It is not just a question of known versus the unknown. It is a question of whether America wants to shed its stereotype image.

Britain has shed its only white notion of a nation and prides itself calling herself a multi-ethnic country. Of course, Europe is far ahead of America when it comes to tolerance and clean and ethical politics and governance.

McCain + Palin may be better than Obama + Biden but it HAS to be Obama + Biden because the president of the united states is not just an American leader.
The election should also reflect world confidence. The American voters should think of their brothers across the boundaries.
