The results of the Pennsylvania primary was the best possible outcome for both the Republicans and anyone who loves to observe history in the making. There is nothing that would be more exciting, politically speaking, than watching a major party convention actually meaning something.
The beauty is, it is near impossible, considering the way things are going, for either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton to break the minimum number of delegates to win the nomination. As a result, it is highly likely that the Democrat race will head to convention.
Not only that, but it will go to convention under controversy due to the fact that Hillary currently leads the popular vote but Obama leads the delegate count. So no matter what happens there are going to be a significant amount of voters who supported the loser that will either not vote in the general election or will vote for McCain.
The worst case scenario for the Democratic Party would be a Hillary nomination. Not because Hillary is worse against McCain and can’t win (she would actually fare far better in the general than Obama), but because if she were nominated it would almost certainly be the result of “super-delegates” giving her the win. And if you thought the outrage over the “stolen” election of 2000 was bad (I didn’t think it was stolen, by the way), just wait until that happens. It would be feasible that a Hillary nomination as a result of super-delegates could destroy the Democratic party.
The most striking thing about this whole Presidential season is that 2008 was set up perfectly for the Democrats, and yet again, they completely screwed it up. If McCain ends up winning in November the Dems have no one to blame but themselves. How do they not win against the Party whose current leader and President has some of the lowest approval ratings in America’s history? Yet, the way things have gone thus far, it would be a miracle if they did win!
